Can you recall a conversation that hasn’t involved the weather?
Come on. Admit it, the weather has provided convenient filler for many a dreadful lull in convo.
I wouldn’t be surprised if observing the conditions “out there” may have even saved a marriage or two (in some cases, incessant weather chatter may been the demise of a relationship).
Any time I go for a run or walk, inevitably the mere sight of a human being will prompt me to say something like, “Sure is a nice day, isn’t it?” or “Can you believe this weather?” Unless that person—be it a neighbor or an absolute stranger—beats me to it.
I can guarantee that if I talk to my parents or in-laws, the conversation could actually revolve around the weather. And sometimes it does.
Climate change has added an entirely new dimension to weather speak and can elicit angry debate or bring a conversation to an abrupt end.

The Weather Channel enables our tendencies toward addiction. Now that weather apps are available, I check the weather every hour—sometimes more. It can be as unconscious as breathing but, at times, draws me into a conversation with myself about the day’s plans.
Who hasn’t slipped the weather man/woman into a tète-à-tète? What an ideal occupation—to be wrong 50 percent of the time and remain employed! And in this economic climate! (Pun intended.) I don’t think there’s a person on this earth who hasn’t complained about the unfairness of it all!
