At my age I remember a wonderful benefit ‘for the earth in the early 80-s. Climate change was happening then but no one did anything about it. after all of these years I am heartbroken to see what has happened to our living earth. as a grandmother of two small boys I can not tell people I speak to how much my heart hurts and the amount of panic I endure.
I want my grandson to see a polar bear,, or a fantastic trip and see glaciers, I am afraid that wonders will be gone by the time they are grown. how sad it is… how very sad.

@Debra – i’m with you! i was publishing a magazine in the 80s about all of this and it was an uphill battle to get folks to pay attention. It is painful to see all that has gone on, but i somehow remain hopeful. for every horror story we hear or read or report on, we get some truly inspiring stories of hope and change. part of our mission with the green divas is to focus on positive news and solutions — not that we don’t report the many challenges and issues — but that we always provide some way of participating or some aspect of hope along with it. it is VERY easy to sink into despair with all of the bad news out there. i have two grandchildren as well, and they give me some hope in future generations. just have to find the hope and cling to it!

Debra and Meg – like you, I have “grand” children, 4 of them to be exact. They are precious and inspiring to watch. I love being around them.

I’m encouraged by the new surge in the climate movement. I attended a march in Quebec city last Saturday – the Act on Climate March. There were 25,000 marchers. the Peoples Climate March in New York last September had 400,000 people with another 200-300,000 around the world. Considering the size of Quebec city and the population of Canada (35 million compared to 350 million US), the Quebec march was a complete success.

These actions are having an impact. Today, the province of Ontario has announced carbon pricing, joining the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia. This means that 60% of the Canadian economy will now be covered by carbon pricing. I would love to see this happen in the US – one state at a time if necessary.

Thank you for your comments on my article.
