Keystone XL Pipeline Friction

Listen to the latest Green Divas myEARTH360 Report where we talk about other top environmental headlines…

Not familiar with the Keystone XL Pipeline and how it may harm the environment?

Read this then continue on for more about it and, of course, the Jon Stewart video..

As Jon Stewart said brilliantly about the mid-term election political hooha surrounding the Keystone XL Pipeline

“So the party that lost the midterm elections because it didn’t stand for anything has decided, ‘Oh, I got an idea — what if we stood for less?'”

Passing the Keystone XL Pipeline to save a Senate seat? Of course. It’s politics.

Oh, and the jobs that will be created with the pipeline. “Millions of permanant jobs!”

Nope. Thirty-five permanent jobs.

A must for national security? Probably not so much. Considering the oil will likely be piped thousands of miles from Canada to Texas only to be exported out of the U.S..

A spill into a water aquifer? Unlikely according to those who support the pipeline. Likely, according to those against…

Not so bad for the environment? Uh… according to NPR:

Producing crude from oil sands emits an estimated 17 percent more greenhouse gases than traditional oil drilling in the U.S. In part, that’s because it has to be heated to separate the crude from the sand.

Fortunately, completion of the Keystone XL pipeline was rejected by the Senate (by a very narrow margin). But they—Democrats and Republicans alike, in the name of big money politics, apparently—won’t stop pushing those pipelines ’til all the tap water along one or all of the pipelines catch on fire. And maybe not even then.

And the Boreal Forest, which is the migration destination for many of our backyard songbirds is being destroyed. As many as 166 million birds could be permanently lost.

It’s going to come up again in 2015 so please urge Obama to keep his promise to reject the climate wrecking pipeline.

And now lighten up by watching Jon Stewart in this Daily Show video…

On a serious note, the Sioux have declared the pipeline an act of war… “the controversial project will traverse land under the control of the Native American tribe, which is now threatening to exercise its rights as a ‘sovereign nation.'” Watch this video from RT

I have to say we all have a lot of work to better communicate the complexity of issues like these with the public, we’re missing the boat!!! I both care about the Keystone XL issue, but am also concerned that the entire climate debate seems to be reduced to this single fight.

Agree, Lindsay! That’s why I love when someone like Jon Stewart puts a humorous spin on a complex issue to get people thinking and, hopefully, opening their eyes to these and other serious climate change game changers.

He is so funny. I love somewhere between 1 million jobs to 35 permanent jobs.

Kind of a wide range. And quite comical. Too bad many will hear the “1 million” from the Rush Limbaugh’s of the world and think its true. Ugh!

I loved that episode! Sadly the Keystone XL is already flowing not far outside of my town. I think it gets forgotten a lot that the southern leg is already built and running.
