Leave no trace
You may have heard the expression “leave nothing but your footprints” when enjoying the outdoors, and wondered what exactly it meant.
The concept of leaving no trace is simple at a glance, but there is more to it than just taking your garbage home with you. Not leaving garbage behind on trails, in parks, and wooded areas is a key component. But there is a lot more to the art of leaving no trace.

Every action taken by a person enjoying the outdoors has an impact on that environment. In order to discover the ways to best preserve our environment, it’s important to read up on the principles of leave no trace that you previously may not have considered.
For example, forging a new path or shortcut is an example of a leave no trace “don’t”, as it can cause erosion to the trail that can affect wildlife, vegetation, and run-off patterns. Similarly, you should set up campsites on well-worn spots where others have camped before, to avoid unnecessary erosion.

Other considerations
Other leave no trace considerations include properly putting out a campfire, and taking active steps to make sure animals can’t get into your food while camping overnight. Neglecting to secure your food and supplies can be just as disastrous as leaving garbage on the ground.
