For Green Divas, Earth Day/Week/Month is like tax season for an accountant.
It’s fun and super busy. We get invited to literally hundreds of events. But this one in SoHo, New York got my attention.
FLOR, manufacturer and marketer of eco-friendly carpet tiles, invited me (and consumers) to participate in their Design Challenge 2015, which is a creative competition being held at 11 FLOR stores, including SOHO, where one grand prize winner will see their original rug design included in a future FLOR line.
I love good creative fun, and something about playing with cool designer colored carpet tiles intrigued me.
So, I did my homework, and this company is pretty serious about weaving sustainability into their manufacturing and marketing processes. They’re adhesives are low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), the fibers used are high-percentage recycled content (and their goal is to be 100 percent)—some of which is coming from used fishing nets! And they are all about keeping the end-game in mind, so they’ve developed an innovative Return & Recycle program, which allows consumers to send back used FLOR tiles to be recycled into new ones.
FLOR is teaming up with eco-designer, Robin Wilson for this creative DIY design competition. All of the events (FLOR store locations: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Georgetown, San Francisco and Portland) will feature meet-and-greets with Robin Wilson, who will be on hand signing copies of her just-released book, Clean Design: Wellness for Your Lifestyle.
In addition to having fun being creative, contestants will make small scale versions of a FLOR rug and one winner from each event will win an 8×10 of their rug, plus go on to the finals – where one winner will be selected to see their rug in a future FLOR line. The winner also gets to name the rug (uh, doesn’t The Green Diva Rug have a nice ring to it?), and 50 percent of the net sales of the rug will go to a charity of their choice.
From July 6 through July 15, the 11 finalists’ rugs will be posted and anyone is invited to log on and vote for their favorite design. The top vote-getter will see their rug in a future FLOR line. In addition, 50 percent of the net proceeds (no pun intended) from the sale of the rug will go to a charity of the winner’s choice (in collaboration with FLOR). The winner will also have the opportunity to name the rug, which will be on display at select FLOR retail stores across the country.
I love my wood floors, but I’ve been toying with the idea of doing the Green Divas Studio since it would help with sound attenuation to have the beautiful wood floors more comprehensively covered. And how fun would it be to be able to get creative with designing my own pattern?
