There’s a lot more to your K-Y than meets the eye…
When it comes to lube, whether we’re using it for partnered sexual encounters, solo sex, or just for extra moisture, there’s a lot to know about what to avoid. When your mucous membranes are involved, there’s just no wiggle room for unsafe ingredients. Keep the toxics out of your nether regions, period.

From parabens—those nasty carcinogenic, endocrine-disrupting “preservatives” pushed by Big Chem—to various other dangerous substances, conventional personal lubricants are full of stuff you don’t want in, or on, your body. Many of the famous drugstore brands contain every environmentalist’s arch enemy: petrochemicals. Lubes often contain other known toxins like Propylene Glycol, an irritant and allergen that, according to the Skin Deep database, has a high rate of absorption via skin.
Would you eat it?
An easy way to choose your lube is to employ the “Would I eat it?” test before purchasing a new product.
If you wouldn’t put it in your mouth, don’t put it into any other orifice (or even on your skin). Opt for USDA certified organic, chemical-free formulations. Avoid glycerin, a ubiquitous ingredient in lubes. Glycerin isn’t a toxin in other products—but in personal lubricant, it strips the vagina of moisture, making it into a potential host for yeast infections and STI’s.
So now you know what to avoid, but wouldn’t you like to know what to buy? My absolute favorite lube of all is a line called Blossom Organics. Their products are pure, have perfect slip for bedroom fun time, and the company is an ethical one.
My most important caveat for lube lovers—coconut oil is totally, totally awesome, but cannot be used with latex condoms. If you have any concerns about STI’s or pregnancy and you’re wrapping it up, don’t ruin it by shredding the condom with an oil.

Love this! She’s so right–people are unwilling to talk about sex but what we put in and on our bodies directly affects our health and sex involves mucous membranes! It’s important to spread the word. I am so happy she is working at this. I was also very interested to hear that glycerin is not a good thing, considering that so many “natural” products contain glycerin.
