My latest test drive was in the Chevy Spark EV . . . a dynamite little powerhouse. All-electric, no gas engine. I LOVED not going to the gas station for a week!
Watch Green Diva Mizar and I as we hit the road in this awesome little car . . .
While they list the range as 82 miles, after my first night of charging, I had an 85 mile range, proceeded to drive 22 miles the next day and came home with an 80 mile range STILL on the battery.
I only charged this car ONCE the whole week, and I still had 20+ miles on it when I returned it.
It is important to note that I work from home and generally don’t go over 25 – 30 miles any given day, this is a perfect car for someone like me. Well, the fact that my husband has a hybrid SUV for longer range driving or trips that require more room, helps.
I was really surprised how smooth, quiet this little gem was. Also, I didn’t expect it to have the responsiveness and power that it did! It takes some adjusting to not having a traditional transmission, but once I did, I rather liked not hearing a gas engine straining to make the next gear shift.
While it isn’t a fully-loaded, luxury vehicle, it gets points for being cute and for the great interactive computer system that incorporates iPhone’s Siri easily. It was really easy for me to get my iPhone 4S connected and then listen to the Green Divas Radio Show right from the Stitcher App or listen to my Pandora.
There is nothing more thrilling than the satisfaction of NOT going to the gas station and if you buy renewable energy, you can feel even better about charging your little spark up.
Chevy did some math and estimates that the average Spark EV driver will use about $10 worth of electricity for a week, as opposed to the $47 per week used for the average gas-engine car. Um, that’s a lot of savings.
Also, this car is NOT expensive. With the $7,500 Federal Tax Rebate, it is about $19k.
The only bummer is that it is primarily a compliance car and is only available in California and Oregon in limited quantities. So, make noise people! We need more of these on the east coast – hey, we’re green out here too!
