My great uncle owns a dairy farm and whenever my family takes a road trip up north I love visiting him and spending my days on the farm. It's so tranquil and relaxing, he still uses the "old method" of milking cows and taking care of everything (he even has his old Model T car still - that actually runs!). It really makes you appreciate the beauty of life and how without modernization, things can get done pretty fast and taste a lot better (raw milk is delicious!). It's hard work and he wakes up early and goes to bed late, but it's fun and rewarding all the same.

Even in an apartment you can do some little things. Try sprouting, they are incredibly nutritious and easy to grow. You can sprout all kinds of things. My favorites are broccoli, radish, mung bean, lentil, and so many other seeds. When I lived in an apartment I grew herbs on my window sill. And if you want to get your hands in the soil, there are community gardens in many communities. If it seem daunting, find someone or more to share a garden plot. Gardening with friends and family is great fun. check out this video on different ways to sprout http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoaIpZZfcFc. Thanks for your comments. Happy Spring!

Wow, you've truly done a lot of amazing things in your time. When I was younger I had my own strawberry patch on a hill in our yard, and I used to love hoarding all the ripe little fruits all to myself. Most of my family lived in Minnesota growing up, so we visited a lot. I remember picking wild blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries - you name it and we found it in the wild and made it into some sort of jam or pie. Nothing store bought tastes remotely the same, it feels like a sad replication of the real thing...even the organic stuff. I've had plenty of gardens growing up but living in an apartment has made this harder to maintain. My dad also used to hunt and we went fishing a lot when I was younger so I learned about meat preservation and how to successfully clean and skin a fish. Along those lines, we lived by a creek so I also learned about the beneficial plants that grew along the water and how to make them into foods. I hope one day I'll have a nice house and big yard so that I can have a garden and when I do have kids to show them how to "live off the land" as well. Thanks for bringing me back to my past. :)
